SUMMARY:Digital Technology as Heavy Industrial Technology: iSlavery and Env
 ironmental Destruction – London – 6th September 2017
DESCRIPTION:Interrogating Digital Capitalism: A series of monthly events qu
estioning liberal ideas of progress through technology\nDigital technology
powers neoliberal capitalism: it is central to globalisation\, financiali
sation\, the ‘flexible economy’\, ongoing waves of automation and now\
, ‘big data capitalism’.\n\nLiberals and many leftists assume that the
problem is not the technology\, but its abuse by corporations\, the milit
ary and the state. But what if we are in a techno-social regime\, in which
these interests shape technology – and technology\, in turn\, shapes ca
pitalism in a way that reinforces itself?\n\nWhat if we are in a digital t
echnocracy in which cybernetic principles of information capture and flexi
ble control are becoming embedded throughout society? What if it is not ju
st a matter of ‘rescuing the digital baby from the capitalist bathwater
’?\n\nJoin us at this series of monthly events looking at current challe
nges raised by digital capitalism.\nEvent 2 - Digital Technology as Heavy
Industrial Technology: iSlavery and Environmental Destruction\nSeptember 6
th 2017\, 7.15pm. Feminist Library meeting room\, 5 Westminster Bridge Roa
d\, London SE1 7XW\nDigital technology is often seen as ‘immaterial’ a
nd ‘smart’\, defining a new industrial and social paradigm.\n\nYet dig
ital gadgets are produced within an ‘old-fashioned’ highly exploitativ
e regime that has been likened to slavery\, whilst the industry creates ma
ssive environmental destruction and makes a major contribution to climate
change.\n\nJack Linchuan Qiu\, author of Goodbye iSlave\, will describe th
e conditions in Chinese electronics factories\, such as Foxconn\, which we
re brought to international attention by a wave of worker suicides in 2010
.\n\nThe second speaker (guest TBC) will look at the environmental impacts
of digital technology and its role in causing conflicts.\n\n Free/donati
 on\n 7.15pm\, September 6th\n Feminist Library meeting room\, 5 Westmins
